Congratulations to the class of 2027! We wish you success in our program and your career.
Our new residents will start their education journey with us in July in a special ‘boot-camp’ style rotation called Transition to Residency. They will be spending time in labs, in-person and virtual lecture theatres and the clinical realm, as we work together to ensure a strong foundation for the five years of training in front of them.
Many thanks to our Resident Selection Committee including the Review Working Group who examined and finessed our admissions processes, participants in our two Information Nights, and members who reviewed over 150 files and conducted 60 interviews to select this accomplished group. Please thank your colleagues for helping us define the future of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Canada!
Secondly, we continue to focus on ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for all learners. This work, mandated by the 2020 Royal College Accreditation process, will ensure we meet targets and goals related to the Learning Environment. We are using various departmental and university data sources, including reports from teacher and rotation evaluations, surveys, resident retreat reports, town hall feedback, focus groups and disclosures of mistreatment through the Faculty of Medicine’s Learner Experience Office. Thank you for all you contribute to making our clinical and academic spaces welcoming for all our learners.
Thirdly, Competency-by-Design is now entering its fourth year in our program! We are grateful to the faculty and residents for their continued engagement with CBD. Every year we see more and more feedback and documentation. Thank you for continuing to provide our residents with teaching and timely feedback linked to their learning goals and EPAs. Despite our progress, we still hear that some residents are having a hard time with faculty following through on EPA documentation. Please remember to complete feedback forms in a timely manner (they expire within a week) as requested (or initiate them yourself!). Janet Bodley and Michèle Farrugia are available to come to meetings or rounds to review any concepts with your team.
NEXT UP: As our residents are progressing, so is our work on the CBD curriculum. We are deep in the planning phase for our final CBD stage, transition-to-practice. The Royal College writes, in their Training Experiences Guide:
The focus of this stage is consolidation of clinical, surgical, and administrative skills in preparation for practice in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Trainees demonstrate independent management of complex patients in all relevant care settings and patient-centred communication skills in difficult situations. This stage includes taking responsibility for administrative tasks, such as teaching, leading, and scheduling junior learners, and participating in QA and QI initiatives while still providing high-quality patient care.
This stage will start in September of the final year of training, following completion of the written Royal College exam – yes – it is moving to September starting 2023! The oral exam will take place in the spring as usual.
And finally, our graduating residents have now written the Royal College exam and will challenge the oral exam on May 31, 2022. We will then bid them a fond farewell at Graduation on June 16, 2022! More about our graduates in the next newsletter!
