In 2018, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto published our very first history book, detailing the events and people who made our department what it is today. This book had been in the making for four years after discussions with our three former chairs. Starting in 1843 with the first inaugural lecture on Midwifery and Diseases of Women and Children, this book takes readers through the highs and lows of our history, including the fight for women to attend medical school, the First and Second World Wars, the improvement of surgical procedures and the expansion of UofT's international advocacy efforts. This story, however, is not an exhaustive list of the accomplishments of our department, and it will continue to grow and change as the years progress.
We look forward to another 175 years of advancing the health of women and infants both in Canada and around the world!
