The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is the largest ObGyn Department in Canada, with over 70 residents and 60 fellows currently completing their training under the guidance of almost 300 faculty members. Each of our trainees brings with them an amazing amount of skills and dedication that makes our Department shine on a local, national and international-level.
We wanted to share some of our trainees' stories to showcase why they are the best in their field! Our first trainee is Dr. Rachel Soyoun Kim, a fellow in our Gynaecologic Oncology Fellowship Program. Dr. Kim was recently published in the prestigious medical journal "Cancer" for her work on research surrounding Lynch syndrome in women with ovarian cancer. Congratulations Dr. Kim!

I am a gynecology oncology fellow with a special interest in cancer genomics and hereditary gynecological malignancies. Under the mentorship of Dr. Sarah Ferguson (Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and Dr. Trevor Pugh (Associate Professor, Department of Medical Biophysics), I spent my research year immersed in bioinformatics, in order to develop a targeted gene panel that will open doors to personalized therapeutics in women with endometrial cancers. Using this targeted gene panel, we were able to identify women with Lynch syndrome (LS) and compare the various screening strategies to identify LS in women presenting with non-serous and non-mucinous ovarian cancers. To complement my research interests, I am completing a Masters in Translational Research through University of Toronto, in order to integrate basic and patient-oriented research to transform scientific discoveries into meaningful clinical applications.
