Dr. Zakhari with Dr. Murji at scientific research day, both smiling at cameraThis month, members from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology's community were featured in Human Reproduction Update, a leading journal in obstetrics and gynaecology, for their publication on the treatment of endometriosis. Dr. Ally Murji, Associate Professor, Dr. Andrew Zakhari, graduate from the Advanced Pelvic Medicine Fellowship, and Dr. Emily Delpero, PGY5 resident, collaborated from colleagues from the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (Dr. George Tomlinson) and Queen's University (Dr. Olga Bougie and Dr. Sandra McKeown). The publication, entitled "Endometriosis recurrence following post-operative hormonal suppression: a systematic review and meta-analysis", evaluated if postoperative hormonal suppression decreases disease recurrence, compared to placebo/expectant management.

"We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, which included over 2,100 women in 17 studies," said Dr. Murji. "Our review provides new evidence that postoperative hormonal suppression decreases endometriosis recurrence and pain. This contradicts the last Cochrane review on the topic. We learned that as few as eight women would need to be treated with postoperative hormonal suppression for at least six months to prevent one endometriosis recurrence.

Dr. Murji goes on to explain that the "main message for gynaecologists is that endometriosis is a chronic condition and surgery alone is not a cure. Extensive patient counselling before surgery is necessary to educate patients and manage their expectations.  Post-operative hormonal suppression should be considered in all patients not seeking to conceive immediately after surgery. We need to help our patients find the ideal medical treatment option that aligns with their individual needs."

The publication is available to be read on the Human Reproduction Update website. Congratulations to the team!
