Department hosts Canadian premiere of endometriosis documentary

A panel of endometriosis experts speaks to an audience

The Division of Minimally Invasive Gynaecologic Surgery recently hosted the Canadian premiere of the endometriosis documentary, Below the Belt, at Innis Town Hall.

More than 200 stakeholders in endometriosis care — including patients, providers, administrators, and more — attended the event, which featured a screening of the film followed by a panel discussion with director and producer Shannon Cohn.

Below the Belt features personal and inspiring stories of endometriosis patients as they navigate the health care system. Even though endometriosis affects one in nine women, the film shows how women with the disease are often dismissed, discounted, and disbelieved.

The panel also featured MPP Marit Stiles, fertility specialist and assistant professor Dr. Prati Sharma, endometriosis surgeon and assistant professor Dr. Jamie Kroft, and Philippa Bridge-Cook, founding member of The Endometriosis Network Canada and co-chair of EndoAct Canada.

“Our goal was to improve awareness of endometriosis and start a dialogue around the improvement of endometriosis care in Toronto. We also want to build a sense of community among endometriosis stakeholders in an informal setting,” said Dr. Ally Murji, associate professor and division head of Minimally Invasive Gynaecologic Surgery (MIGS).

“We all came away from the event feeling inspired by the stories of endometriosis patients.  There was a sense of optimism that we have so many passionate providers and advocates who share a common purpose of striving to do more to elevate endometriosis care.”
