Dr. Steven Narod is a world-leader in the field of breast and ovarian cancer genetics. Over the course of his career, he has profoundly shaped current knowledge of how to assess breast and ovarian cancer risk and reduce its mortality amongst carriers of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. He studies various aspects of cancer prevention and screening, proving that prophylactic surgeries and medications can prevent hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. He also conducts research in breast cancer in young women and in the early stages of breast cancer, including DCIS.

Dr. Narod has studied breast cancer in a number of ethnic populations, including people of French-Canadian, Polish, Bahamian and Ashkenazi Jewish descent. His database of 17,000 mutation carriers from 20 countries supports numerous international collaborations.

Dr. Steven Narod is a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Breast Cancer, a University of Toronto professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Medicine, and a senior scientist at Women’s College Research Institute, where he leads the Familial Breast Cancer Research Unit.

In 2012, Dr. Narod was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and he holds two honorary degrees. He received the 2016 Killam Prize in health sciences and the 2015 Basser Global Prize. With more than 900 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 110, Dr. Narod is one of the most cited cancer researchers in the world.
