Dr. Balki is a Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Anesthesia and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She is also a director of Clinical and Basic Science Obstetric Anesthesia Fellowship Program at Mount Sinai Hospital.

As a Senior Clinician Scientist, she runs a state-of-the art laboratory at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, which aims to study physiological mechanisms of myometrial contractility in relation to uterotonic drugs and postpartum hemorrhage. She has received several peer-reviewed grants and awards as a Principal investigator, including highly competitive national Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and international Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology grants.

Her research program aims to reduce the risk and impact of various maternal complications and improve patient safety. She has published more than 100 papers in international leading Anesthesiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology journals. Her research findings have changed a number of practice guidelines across Canada and the United States, and are taught in education curricula at the post-graduate level.

She is a member of the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia and international Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology Research Committee.

She has gained recognition as an international expert in obstetric anesthesia due to her sustained research productivity and several invited lectures in national and international scientific meetings.
