Program Information

The overall goal of this 1-2 year Fellowship is to gain experience of contemporary North American tertiary-level obstetric practice as it applies to hospitalist-based assessment, management, and care of both high- and low-risk pregnancies.

This will include exposure to high-risk antepartum patients presenting with complications of pregnancy to Labour and Delivery Triage; coordination of high-risk and low-risk intrapartum management; point of care obstetric ultrasound; and liaising with multidisciplinary colleagues (i.e., nursing, midwifery, paediatrics, anaesthesia, genetics, allied health, medical/surgical specialties) and diagnostic services (i.e., pathology, medical imaging, interventional radiology).

The Fellowship is intended for overseas trained graduate specialists in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Advanced Hospitalist Obstetrics Fellows are expected to function at the level of a Canadian PGY2-3 resident.

Objectives

The objectives of this Fellowship Program are as follows:

  • To develop skills and experience working effectively in a Canadian tertiary-level obstetric care facility.
  • To be exposed to and develop knowledge of the range of high- and low-risk obstetrical problems and emergencies.
  • To understand and learn contemporary obstetric care management protocols, including SOGC and ACOG guidelines, including the concept of risk management.
  • To function in an educational capacity to junior clinical postgraduate trainees in obstetric Triage, labour and delivery and the obstetrical operating room.
  • To assist obstetric staff in Cesarean sections.
  • To provide educational instruction to rotating clinical medical students in obstetrics.
  • To attend and participate in educational rounds, seminars and conferences provided within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology related to advanced obstetric care.
