Seven Faculty Members Receive AFP Innovation Fund Grants

Headshots of AFP Winners 2019The AHSC AFP Innovation Fund competition is a collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). It provides short-term (one or two-year) seed funding to support innovative projects that will transform health-care delivery in Ontario.

According to the AHSC AFP Innovation Fund Framework and Guidelines, projects are particularly innovative if they:

  • Have a definite potential to impact health care delivery
  • Are implementable and contains realistic goals
  • Have clear, measurable metrics for success
  • Offer opportunities to translate new knowledge into medical practice
  • Are transferable to other institutions, or regions, or the province.

Our Department is very proud to announce that seven of our faculty members were awarded this grant for their research projects in April. These seven grants were split between three hospital sites (listed alphabetically):

Mount Sinai Hospital

 Dr. Genevieve Bouchard-Fortier
Project Name: Comprehensive Perioperative Care Program in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Oncology Surgery
Co-Investigators: Drs Stephane Laframboise, Stuart McCluskey, Marcus Bernardini, Gregg Nelson and Murray Krahn
Funding Award: $185,000
 Dr. Ellen Greenblatt
Project Name: Building Healthy Babies: Development of a preconception program to decrease the incidence of major congenital abnormalities in Ontario newborns
Co-Investigators: Drs Amanda Selk and Claire Jones
Collaborators: Drs Jonathan Snelgrove, Maiam Roifman, Joel Ray, Eyal Cohen and Natalie Morson
Funding Award: $78,000
 Dr. Nan Okun
Project Name: Prediction and Prevention of Early PET in Ontario
Co-Investigators: Drs Nimrah Abbasi, Tim Van Mieghem, Barry Hoffman, Kellie Murphy, Anne Biringer and Jodi Shapiro
Funding Award: $180,000

Project Name: Resident Perceptions of Midwifery in Obstetrical Care: Just in Time Interprofessional Education
Funding Amount: $27,255

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

 Dr. Patricia Lee
Project Name: Laser vaginal treatment for genitourinary syndrome of menopause
Co-Investigators: Drs Rose Kung, Lesley Carr, Sender Herschorn, Michael Shier, Janet Bodley, Louise Gagnon and Alex Kiss
Funding Amount: Fund of the Alternative Funding Plan for the Academic Health Sciences Centres of Ontario - $99,750
 Dr. Ori Nevo
Project Name: Inpatient vs Outpatient Management of Women with Short Cervix: An RCT
Co-Investigators: Drs Ronzoni, Barrett and Mei-Dan
Funding Amount: $75,000
